The Committee on the Protection of Natural Resources in Manipur (CPNRM) expresses our strong condemnation regarding the news report of the Manipur police of the Government of Manipur for filing First Information Report (FIR) to communities protesting against Petroleum Exploration in Manipur at the environmental public hearing organized by Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on 17th August 2012 at Nungba. The filing of FIR has proved that the Government of India, Govt of Manipur and the Jubilant Oil and Gas Pvt. Ltd (JOPL) only insists on militaristic forms of development in clear violation of indigenous peoples rights. read more

North East Exodus: Class Unity is the Key!

The following statement is with reference to the very recent incident of many North Eastern people in Bangalore and other cities in Karnataka (and now Chennai, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh) fleeing the city in their thousands to rumours of planned attacks against them after Ramadan in response to the communal violence against Muslims that took place recently in Assam. While rumours are yet to be verified or substantiated and no big instance of violence against the North Eastern community have been reported anywhere in the city so far, there is an added fear especially after the recent flare up of violence by misguided Muslim youth in Mumbai that was largely directed against the media and the police. The violence in Mumbai was deliberately instigated by few reactionary Muslim leaders with false propaganda and doctored images from the recent violence in Assam and alleged killing of Muslims in Myanmar. read more

Why wait for getting into power in the State again?!

Firstly it is a Central Govt. issue, secondly Prime Minister Singh, as early as in 2004, made a definite promise to the people of Manipur,that the AFSPA would be repealed, and even set up the Jivan Reddy Commission to look into the issue, the Commission gave a categorical report recommending the repeal of the draconian law, that report is lying in cold storage. read more

The scenic, beautiful and culturally diverse states of the North Eastern frontier really are a “Paradise Unexplored” for the world. But within the “Seven Sisters” lies deep roots of agony and misery, entwined by the historic exploitation by the Indian ruling class and various secessionist movements that has become a daily reality in most parts of the North-East.
