On 28th September, the New Socialist Alternative, Pune Branch organised a program on the birth anniversary of the well known socialist freedom fighter – Shahid Bhagat Singh (1907-1931). About 60 people attended the event.
Leading to the event, our members had distributed pamphlets and stuck posters in many colleges in Pune. The program was held at Samaj Vidnyan Academy, Pune. The program started with revolutionary songs that were sung by our members Rushikesh, Dhanashree, Sagar, Anita and Ketki. Comrade Omkar introduced everyone to the Nav Samaj Yuva Manch – NSYM (youth wing of the New Socialist Alternative – Pune) which was the driving force behind the programme. Omkar also introduced the speaker Comrade Datta Desai (a left activist and writer) and spoke about his contributions.
In the first session, Datta Desai spoke about the Bhagat Singh’s life and important contributions to the freedom struggle. He mentioned that Bhagat Singh was not only a freedom fighter, but also a Marxist and fought for Socialism.
During the tea break, we released our new publication in Marathi called ‘Tarun Mhanun Samaj Samjun Ghetana’, a booklet, which is aimed at targeting the youth to make them understand the structural inequalities in society and how capitalism works. Comrade Rushikesh spoke regarding the booklet.
In the second session, we had a lively Q&A session with the main speaker – Datta Desai. We will also be organizing one more program to discuss more on the booklet we have just published.
The program ended with the revolutionary song “hillele jagjore duniya..(The world is shaking)”.
