On April 2nd 2013, the Supreme Court (SC) of India passed its judgment in favor of the Sterlite Industries to continue the operation of its Copper Smelting plant in Tutucorin, which the Madras High court ordered to be closed in 2010. As a compensation for the damage to the Environment which the company has done SC directed the company to Pay Rs. 100 Crores over a period of 3 months. The Judgment has come days after the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) ordered shutdown of the plant after a gas leak on March 30, 2013 which caused suffocation, eye irritation and sore throat to the people residing in the plant’s vicinity. However the SC said that its judgment will not override the TNPCB’s decision to close the plant.
Mere sabre-rattling or real risk to lives of millions?
Last week, fear and tension escalated on the Korean peninsula and far beyond, for very understandable reasons. North Korea is a quasi Stalinist regime of a peculiar kind and inherently unstable. The new ‘great leader’ – Kim Jon-un – appears to be even more unpredictable than his father when it comes to threats of sending nuclear weapons into the sky.
On Wednesday 3rd April some 50 people gathered in front of the Antwerp central station in a solidarity action with the protest of the students in Tamil Nadu. Almost four years after the official ‘end’ of the war the continuing suffering of the Tamil population of Sri Lanka risks to be forgotten. The students of Tamil Nadu have changed that with the protest they started to organise themselves. They took the struggle in their own hands and received a huge support from Tamils all over the world.
