Barbarous Attack on Socialists in Nigeria
Condemn President Jonathan’s Civilian Dictatorship!
Just yesterday on the 1st of May, world over the workers in all continents of the globe celebrated the day of their class, through rallies, protests, strikes, sit-ins etc. While in many countries a semblance of democratic approval of May Day is there, but in many, even today this is met by brutal repression. Nigeria’s ruling class is notorious when it comes to treating its wealth creators: the workers. Democratic Socialist Movement the sister party of New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India) affiliated to Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI) has been in the thick and thin of the struggles of the Working Class and other down trodden sections of Nigeria for many years. Recently the Democratic Socialist Movement – DSM (CWI-Nigeria) has launched a campaign to to create a mass Socialist Party of Nigeria which is finding an echo among the working poor who are fed up of the Corrupt Capitalist Political parties of that country. This attack on the comrades of DSM on May Day is an indication of the descent of the ruling regime to open Military intimidation. We call upon Trade Unionists, Human Rights organisations, Women’s groups, Fighting Organisations of the Daliths, Adivasis, Christians and Muslims and all progressives to join in condemning the Nigeria’s Jonathan government for this barbarous attack. We request all the organisations and individuals to send protest letters to the Nigerian embassy with a copy to us at newsocialist.in@gmail.com.
