Beware the anger of women against the bosses’ system!
For over a hundred years, March 8th has been the day on which to commemorate the great struggles of working women for a better deal at work and in society. It is also the day to celebrate the contribution of women – some famous, many unknown – in the fight against oppression and for socialism.
The following article is written by Protap Debnath, a student activist and member of the New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India) on the recent mass mobilization of youth in Bangladesh at Shahbagh.
These protests could very well mark the beginning of a revolutionary wave in the region and has left the Bangladesh ruling class terrified at facing such a prospect. Though the initial trigger for the movement was the verdict of the war crimes tribunal against the perpetrators of the genocide in the national liberation struggle in 1971, the movement is definitely linked to the frustrations of the youth and the working people of Bangladesh in present day Bangladesh.

The vile gang-rape of a 23 year old student in Delhi, India and her resultant death in December 2012 has brought the social scourge of rape into sharp focus. Horrifically, this particular case was in no way out of the ordinary in its nature or severity. What made it exceptional was the explosive response to the travesty – the “rage against rape” that brought masses of women as well as of men opposed to the huge prevalence of rape and sexual violence perpetrated in the main against women and children, onto the streets in outrage.
On February 24th, ruling party AIADMK{{1}} members celebrated Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister J Jayalalitha 65th birthday in a grand manner with the usual loud music, distribution of sweets, announcing various schemes, organizing sports, etc. But on the same day, Vidya, a 21 years old from Adambakkam in Chennai, died at a government hospital in Chennai due to an acid attack on her. She was the second victim succumbing to an acid attack in recent times as another girl named Vinodhini, A B.Tech student from Puducherry died after battling for three months in the hospital.
