For many of us the war in Sri Lanka was over in the month of May 2009, when the armed rebellion was defeated by the combined might of many super powers including that of India. But for the Tamils of Sri Lanka’s origin, a war of other form and means is still rages both within their cherished land and in the lands where they have sought “political” asylum.
About 500 people, including many students, activists and a few workers joined the protest – Resist the Silent Emergency, organized by many groups and organizations including the New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India) on 26th June to mark the 37th year of declaration of emergency in 1975. The protest mainly highlighted the emergency like situation prevailing in many parts of India even today after almost 65 years of independence.

The state of Emergency was imposed by the Indian State on June 26,1975 which continued till 1977. During this period, the press was gagged, thousands were detained without trial, many were tortured, custodial deaths and encounter killings became unaccountable, minorities were forcefully sterilized, poor people’s living & dwellings called as slums were destroyed and all opposition to the Government was brutally crushed. During Emergency, laws such as NSA & MISA were used to ruthless ssuppress and brutalise people.
More than 200 people gathered at Town Hall, Bangalore on 14th June to commemorate the 84th birth anniversary of the legendary, revolutionary figure – Ernesto “Che” Guevara. The event saw the participation of many college students and was marked by music performances by Beat Gurus band and by St. Joseph College students. A spanish song on Che was sung by Kaveri Indira (Lesbit) and a Kannada song was sung by Kenchaih. G K Govinda Rao (activist) and Jagadish G Chandra (New Socialist Alternative) addressed the gathering. The whole event was supported by many progressive organizations including the New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India).
The following leaflet has been brought out to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary, revolutionary fighter and Marxist – Ernesto Che Guevera, falling on 14th June. The event is an youth initiative and supported by many progressive organisations and individuals which includes the New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India).
