Karnataka: POSCO Suffers Setback

After Orissa, POSCO had set its sights on Karnataka. The plan was laid out in the last year Global Investors Meet (or more correctly Global Looters Meet) that was held in Bangalore (June) and had all the big names in the world of business attending the conference that was organized by the BJP led Karnataka government. Among those present were the representatives of POSCO, the South Korean steel giant (now infamous throughout India for its ruthless attempt in trying to capture Dhinkia & Govindpur villages in Orissa), who had promised investment to the tune of Rs. 30,000 crore. The plan was to set up 6 million tonne per annum steel plant and a 400 mv captive power station in the three village of north Karnataka district – Gadag, which would have affected more than 600 farming communities. read more

Gurgaon: Maruti Suzuki Workers’ Strike

The 13 day strike of over 2000 workers in the Maruti Suzuki India’s (MSI) Manesar plant in Gurgoan (Haryana), close to the national capital Delhi, in the first weeks of June is an important sign of ascendancy of the working class militancy in the region. This strike comes in the wake of the victory of the Gorakhpur Yarn workers (Uttar Pradesh) and a partial victory of the Air India pilots earlier. While the result of the Maruti workers strike cannot really be termed a victory for the workers as the media, management, government and (most disgustingly by the) central trade unions proclaim, it nevertheless comes at an important juncture of high price rises and a not so bright economic outlook for the country. read more
