A protest is being organised by New Socialist Alternative<\/strong> (CWI-India)<\/em> on 23rd Oct. 2013, in solidarity with the\u00a0Workers’ Cause in China.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wu Guijun<\/strong>, a worker and Trade Union activist has been held in police detention since\u00a023rd May\u00a0of this year \u2013 in protest against the criminalisation of workers\u2019 struggle in China.\u00a0 Wu Guijun’s imprisonment brings to us the memory of more than a year long jailing of the 147 heroic Maruthi Suzuki workers in India. Around the world, the working class are once again showing combative spirits and are challenging the capitalist rulers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chinese section of the Committee for a Workers’ International<\/strong> (CWI)<\/em> chinaworker.info<\/a><\/strong> has called for an international day of protest on\u00a023 October\u00a0to mark 5 months since Wu Guijun was arrested at a workers’ protest march. This is part of a growing chorus of protests from trade unions and other concerned organisations around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are protesting over the extra-legal detention of Shenzhen workers\u2019 representative Wu Guijun, arrested and detained for almost five months, following a labour dispute in May. Wu and his fellow workers, at the Diweixin Product Factory in Shenzhen\u2019s Baoan district, took strike action to demand compensation and back pay, as the Hong Kong-owned company shifted production from Shenzhen to Huizhou.<\/span><\/p>\n

It seems Wu Guijun could be charged with “gathering a crowd” and other public order offences which can carry a 5-year jail sentence. The case highlights the worsening crackdown on workers’ rights, strike action and free speech in China. Wu is 40 years old, with two children and two elderly parents to support. His wife is also a migrant worker earning just 2,000 yuan per month (Rs. 20,220). For months he was refused access to family and even a lawyer.<\/span><\/p>\n
