Photo: CNN-IBN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Rage, disbelief and above all a deep sense of solidarity were on display at a protest outside the Indian embassy on 7th January. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialistparty.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Socialist Party<\/a> members joined up to 500 women (and a significant number of men) who had gathered in support of India\u2019s recently exploded <a href=\"http:\/\/socialism.in\/index.php\/rape-sexual-violence-by-products-of-patriarchy-capitalism\/\" target=\"_blank\">movement<\/a> against the heinous crime of rape and the politics and culture that normalise it. Placards raised high on the demonstration had slogans such as \u2018don\u2019t blame the victims\u2019. Disgust at the horrific gang rape which sparked the movement was matched by an understanding of the endemic nature of this crime in Indian society. There was more to this crime than a few, extremely bad individual men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Discussions on the protest were varied, with people clearly looking for answers as to how we can campaign to stop rape and violence against women. Socialist Party members were proud to be able to point out the work of our Indian sister party,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Socialism.in\" target=\"_blank\">New Socialist Alternative<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialistworld.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">CWI<\/a>-India)<\/strong>, which is taking part in the movement in\u00a0India. We raised the need to view rape within the context of the sexism which is endemic within societies based on class oppression, and to link it to the struggle against austerity and capitalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As well as discussing the movement in\u00a0India\u00a0we also raised the need to fight sexism here in\u00a0Britain. The <a href=\"http:\/\/socialiststudents.org.uk\/wp\/\" target=\"_blank\">Socialist Students <\/a>campaign <a href=\"http:\/\/rapeisnojoke.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rape is No Joke<\/a>, which is take up the issue of \u2018rape jokes\u2019 in comedy, drew widespread support with many signing up to get involved.
