The call was given by 10 major central trade unions, including Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), representing millions of workers. The strike also received support from the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (United Farmers Front), representing multiple farmer unions.

In Pune, workers from various sectors, farmers, and bank employees gathered at the District Collector’s office to express their support for the strike. The ‘Shramik Hakk Andolan’, a trade union linked with New Socialist Alternative actively participated in the general strike.

After coming to power for a third term in 2024, the Modi government has intensified its attacks on working class. In November 2025, it decided to implement the four Labour Codes that were long passed in 2019–20 but kept on hold. These new Labour Codes undermine the fundamental rights of workers taking away whatever bare minimum legal protection they received. Higher inflation, continued privatization of public services, rising unemployment and contractualization of jobs places an increasing burden on people’s lives. MGNREGA (Rural employment guarantee) scheme was majorly restructured last month severely abolishing whatever marginal support provided to rural toiling masses. The new trade agreements especially the one with US have seen Modi government capitulating to global capital and opening up sectors like agriculture that could compromise livelihood of millions of farmers.These new policies adversely impact on the working masses of the country.

At Pune, the rally saw hundreds of workers gathering and sloganeering against central policies. Representatives of various trade union articulated their positions during the protest. Worker representatives from ‘Shramik Hakk Andolan’ termed the new labor codes as the historic attack on the working class. They drew attention to the fact that workers have historically secured their rights through a long class struggle, and those very rights are now being diluted at the behest of capitalist interests. The workers were appealed to wage a sustained struggle to defeat the attack.

The following key demands were put forward through this nationwide strike:

* Immediate repeal of all four Labour Codes.

* Restoration of MGNREGA.

* Immediate withdrawal of anti-people laws such as the Electricity (Amendment) Act, 2025; the Viksit Bharat Guaranteed Employment and Livelihood Mission Act, 2025; and the Shanti Act, 2025.

* Withdrawal of Trade Agreements signed by India with the United States and the European Union.

New Socialist Alternative, India
12th Feb, 2026

On the backdrop of continued attacks by Modi government on working class, including the amended new labour code, rampant privatization,…

[4

post-12858","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
["GET
