While the mainstream corporate media has blackened out any serious coverage around the suspension and hounding of JNU students, the struggle of the students against the Modi government’s and its proxy, the university administration continues. Some of the JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) students have been on a hunger strike since April 27th, the day after the JNU administration issued out “punishments” to 17 students who were involved in the Febraury 9th event. While most students, including JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, were awarded penalties and fines, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and Kashmiri student Mujeeb Gatoo have been suspended and banned from campus. In particular, Anirban has been rusticated for five years just as he nears the end of his PhD.
The following article is written by a student of Hyderabad Central University and member of New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India). It documents the experiences of the students in the past few days and their determination to fight against the administration against all odds.
Certainly the return of Appa Rao marks a new low for the HRD ministry and the Central govt who have not uttered anything of significance on the whole incident. But one thing is clear, they want to crush this budding student/ youth movement that has grown rapidly into a significant force ever since Rohith Vemula’s institutional murder by suicide.
This event was organized by Peoples’ Solidarity Concerns – Bangalore which includes the New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India)
A very united and spirited show of solidarity by many, Student’s & Dalit organisations, Political Groups, Women organisations and many prominent progressive personalties against the dastardly police attack on the Students of Hyderabad University who are seeking Justice for Rohit Vemula who was a victim of Casteist conspiracy. The Protest also condemned the Hindutva Vigilantism which has gone on a spree of lynching and killing people especially the Muslims in the name of Cow protection. The gathering also extended Solidarity with Honda Workers of Rajasthan who are fighting for basic Workers Rights to form a Union and abolition of Contract Labour practice. Meeting was addressed by many representatives who were highly critical of the Modi administration which is showing its true colours on all sections of people through its draconian policies and has unleashed an undeclared EMERGENCY to coerce people.
It has been twenty six days since the students of University of Hyderabad in India, have been fighting against the practice of Caste discrimination and Untouchability in the campus including the eleven days of total shut-down and strike at the University following the death of the Dalit student scholar, activist Rohit Vemula. This institutional murder has led to a wave of solidarity actions all across the country of India in an unprecedented manner.
The India wide protests that have erupted following the “circumstances” orchestrated by the RSS/BJP right wing which lead to the forced death (SUICIDE) of Rohith Vemula. Rohith a Research Scholar coming from the Dalit SC community was pursuing his doctoral studies at the Hyderabad Central University (HCU). His murder by suicide has once again brought to the surface the ugly face of India’s caste ridden hierarchical society. To make matters worse, we have a ruling party that is steeped in an ideology of hate against minorities and the oppressed castes (particularly the Dalits), promoting Brahmanical bigotry every step of the way.
