Sharmila Irom & the Struggle Against AFSPA

Photo: northeasttodayThe following article written by Shruti K, a student activist from St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore and involved in the Repeal AFSPA campaign (which includes the New Socialist Alternative CWI-India) in solidarity with Sharmila Irom’s 12 year long fast.

As the momentum towards building a nationwide campaign to pressure the Indian government to repeal AFSPA continues, such as petition campaigns which has been submitted to the President of India, Indian ruling class shows no sign of relenting. On the 10th December Human Rights Day, the government prevented the yearly symbolic solidarity dharna (sitting) in support of Sharmila Irom at Jantar Mantar (well known protest point in Delhi).

Repeal AFSPA now!

Why wait for getting into power in the State again?!

Firstly it is a Central Govt. issue, secondly Prime Minister Singh, as early as in 2004, made a definite promise to the people of Manipur,that the AFSPA would be repealed, and even set up the Jivan Reddy Commission to look into the issue, the Commission gave a categorical report recommending the repeal of the draconian law, that report is lying in cold storage.

The following article was written by an activist of Pedestrian Pictures (a media activist organisation) and a close supporter of People’s Solidarity Concerns-Bangalore (which includes the New Socialist Alternative CWI-India). The article is based around the contrasting pictures between Anna Hazare’s 12 day fast and Irom Sharmila’s 12th year of fast. While Sharmila is fasting on a legitimate demand, against all odds and a complete media blackout, for the repeal of the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the North East, Anna Hazare’s theatrics demanding a very undemocratic and draconian legislation called the Lokpal Bill (Ombudsman bill) could not have looked more ridiculous.

Spirited Action Against AFSPA

In Solidarity with Irom Sharmila’s 12th year Fast

To express solidarity support with Irom Sharmila’s fast and protest against the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the North East and Kashmir, People’s Solidarity Concrens-Bangalore (a forum of radical activists, human rights and political groups which includes the New Socialist Alternative) organized a series of programmes on 26th November. This included screening of a film, talk by Babloo Loitongbam and a protest at Town Hall (well known protest point in Bangalore) that was attended by about 500 people, mostly students.
