Solidarity Appeal From Anti- POSCO Movement

The following is the statement by the anti – POSCO movement, POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) on the recent attacks on the protesters by the hired goons of the government and POSCO, with rods and petrol bombs, critically injuring many. After a lull in the Orissa government push to illegally acquire the land for POSCO, they are back once again, this time in the form of a private militia linked to the ruling BJD party in Orissa. The Orissa government is trying by any means necessary to cow down the peasants and fisher folk of Dhinkia, Gobindpur and Nuagaon to give up on their precious land for the POSCO project. read more

Hundreds of armed police are invading Govindpur Village (the Centre of Anti -Posco struggle) after the Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Pattnaik, gave his consent for armed intervention. One police platoon has actually entered the forest area to break down the people’s beetle vines which provide them with their livelihood. The people of the movement against POSCO (the PPSS) have been peacefully protesting at the Govindpur village border against the forceful land acquisition on behalf of the Korea-based multinational, POSCO. read more

While the entire media spotlight today is focused on the Baba Ramdev fiasco & the big corruption scandals rocking the central govt., hardly any attention has gone to what probably is the biggest corruption scandal involving the land acquisition for the POSCO steel project (India’s biggest FDI) in Odisha. This almost free giveaway of 4004 acres of forest & fertile land for a mega steel plant, a massive coal powered thermal plant & a large captive port is a disaster waiting to happen which would result in a net loss of livelihood of nearly 30,000 people, an environment catastrophe in terms of pollution from the industry, destruction of an ecologically sensitive area & loot of natural resources by a multinational company in connivance with state/ central govt. & the bureaucracy. read more

Anti - POSCO Activists Protesting in Bangalore

Over 100 activists from different civil society organizations under the banner of People’s Solidarity Concerns protested against the entry of the South Korean multinational in Orissa as well as Karnataka (9th Nov. 2010). The Rs. 54,000/- crore project to construct a steel plant, iron ore mining and a port is already being opposed by the fish workers, farmers and adivasis.
