The following article, written by a close supporter of the New Socialist Alternative (CWI -India), is based on a very recent visit by her to the Raichur district of Karnataka that has been in news lately due to reports of malnutrition related deaths among many children. Raichur is among the most backward districts of Karnataka and also its most neglected area with a large section of the population coming from marginalized communities. It is not as if the district is not resource rich. For instance, while most of the power supply to Bangalore comes from Raichur district, but the people of this district hardly get 4 – 5 hrs of power supply daily! read more

Punjab: Ludhiana Textile Workers’ Struggle

It has been over 40 days now since the struggle by the Ludhiana (Punjab) Powerloom workers began (22nd September), but the struggle by these workers belonging to over 155 factories (involving more than 2500) shows no sign of receding. If anything, these workers are determined as never before, even skipping the Diwali celebrations, to lay claim to their basic rights as workers in a industry, which the labour department is hardly bothered about (despite statutory laws protecting these workers), with the mill owners conniving with the labour department and the Punjab state government to cow down the workers. read more

URGENT APPEAL FROM POSCO PRATIRODH SANGRAM SAMITI AS ON 1st NOVEMBER 2011

The following appeal by the anti–POSCO movement comes as government and POSCO are planning their next move which could finally checkmate against those opposed to the setting up of the POSCO steel plant. On the one hand, both the government and the company are trying to build an alternative road (with protection by police and POSCO goons) along the coast to gain access to the proposed POSCO site. On the other hand, the government is now coming out with statements such that 2000 acres of land already forcibly acquired for the project could be enough for POSCO to start with. read more
