The wage rates of casual and regular workers of both men and women workers in rural and urban areas are very low compared to other States. As per the latest National Sample Survey Office statistics, the daily wage rates of casual men and women workers in rural areas are lower than the corresponding rates in India, with the State ranking 14th (Rs.69) and ninth (Rs.56) in men’s and women’s wage rates respectively among the major 20 States. In the case of urban casual workers’ daily wages, the State ranked seventh (Rs.109) and 14th (Rs.56) for male and female wage rates. In the case of regular rural workers also the State ranked 17th (Rs.152) and ninth (Rs.108) in the male and female wage rates respectively. The corresponding ranks for urban areas are 18th (Rs.205) and 13th (Rs.182) respectively among the major 20 States in India. According to NSSO 2011 figures about 98 per cent of the women workers and about 89 per cent of the male workers in the State are engaged in informal work . read more

Report on the Workers’ Strike in Reliance Textile Industries, Naroda plant, Ahmedabad

The following article is a report on the ongoing strike by workers’ at a textile unit at Naroda, near Ahmedabad (Gujarat) as reported by Parag (Krantikari Naujawan Sabha) who alsong with a team of activists recently met up with the workers. The plant is owned by none other than the Indian Multinational giant Reliance conglomerate. Being one of the most industrialised states and headed by , BJP’s Narendra Modi who is well known for instigating the communal riots in 2002, the captains of theIndian industry along with the support of the political establishment (both BJP and the Congress) have created a media hype of mythic proportions on Gujarat under the slogan of “Vibrant Gujarat”. read more

Though hardly any of the political observers predicted a defeat for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), very few foresaw the huge victory that the protagonists of Hindu chauvinism managed to secure in the Gujarat elections of December, 2002, through their hate campaign against Muslims. The BJP increased its strength in the Gujarat assembly from 117 (in 1998) to 125 in the lower house which has 182 seats, while Congress – the main opposition – got 51 seats, loosing two seats from last time. read more
